Editorial decisions ended in the Tang Amaya/The Mistress plot line being dropped and left unresolved, and the story that got published in Tales #34 was something completely different. Never-the-less, artist Scott Cohn completed the pencils for the cover and the first 9 pages, which he was kind-enough to share on his blog.
Here's the cover, though:

It's a shame we never got this story; I'm not sure why editorial at Mirage decided to kill it. Still, I'm glad to see the thread was eventually resolved in TMNT (Vol. 3) #25 and Cohn's art is always a treat. Check his blog for more!

Good ol' Andrew did both TMNT fans and writers a real service, didn't he?
Is this cover an homage to another cover? I've seen a similar layout before. I wanna say it was Batman at the grave of his parents...but don't quote me.
There's a Tim Sale splash with Bruce after he gets hit with the fear gas in The Long Halloween. Maybe that's it?
Personally, it reminds me of that Daredevil cover that Frank Miller did, where Matt Murdock is clinging to Elektra's grave will crying.
But beyond that, I dunno if it's an intentional homage or not.
ironically enough, i was searching the unused art on google so i could find it on my own blog to re-pitch to IDW. looked up the editor today in fact.
as for the cover, it wasn't referenced from anything. it's possible i was referencing images from memory, but definitely nothing on purpose.
the story was resolved though? really? bummer.
@Scott Cohn
TMNT (Vol. 3) #24-25 were unofficial publications produced with consent and input of the official creators, so it's sort of in a grey area.
Ross May had to work the resolution to Tales #22 into the tapestry of the Image TMNT Vol. 3 series, and most certainly heavily modified his original ideas.
So "resolved" though it may be, I think we'd all still dig seeing yours and Ross's original conclusion to the storyline.
