Awesome Turtle Picture #009

This is a teaser for the first appearance of Leatherhead, published in Tales of the TMNT (Vol. 1) #5.

There's no credit on the art, but I'd presume it's Ryan Brown and Jim Lawson.

Mirage was always awesome with their original promotional artwork and adverts, with this piece being especially effective when you consider that it's the first time anyone ever heard of or saw Leatherhead. It's a simple, creepy introduction to the character designed like the kind of classic 80s VHS horror movie box you'd see at Blockbuster or Erol's back in the day. (In fact, it bears a likely coincidental resemblance to the VHS box for "Alligator")

I have seen that one before! I think it's a pretty neat piece; seeing an artist so associated with the golden and silver age tackling such a modern property.

I wouldn't rank it among Kirby's finest compositions, but it's a cool bit of Turtle history, especially considering how both Eastman and Laird cite Kirby as one of their major influences.
