TMNT (2003) Season 3, Part 4 review up at AIPT

My review for TMNT (2003) Season 3, Part 4 is up over at AIPT!

Season 3 really brings its A-game in the backend.  "Time Travails" and "Hun on the Run" are great (especially the latter, which has possibly the best fight scene in the series).  While the "Return of the Ultimate Ninja" arc gets off to a bumpy start with some dull Super Turtles and Planet Racers crossovers, it goes full throttle when it hits "Same as it Never Was".

Hope to finish up season 3 soon; possibly before the site's 10th Anniversary at the end of the month.

New manga translation: "Donatello's New Invention!"

This was the pack-in comic by Naoto Tsushima that came with the 2003 Donatello action figure (identical to the Playmates version, distributed in Japan by TakaraTomy).  As always, the raw scans were provided by Adam Winters, the translation was by me, and the image/text editing came courtesy of Cryomancer.

This batch of episodes debuts Nobody to the 4Kids TMNT continuity, as well as Dr. Chaplin who is even more of a nobody than Nobody.  I'd say the highlight of this bundle, though, is the crazy Call of Cthulhu parody episode that doesn't pull any punches.  They went for it and they went all the way.  Gotta respect that.

This was a real good batch of episodes, too.  We get the full introduction of Bishop, the return of Leatherhead, and then some random Mirage comic adaptations of varying accuracy and quality.  Also, the first appearances of nobody's favorite villains: Touch and Go!

I'll try and get another one of these out for mid-February and get back on my monthly cartoon review schedule.

TMNT (2003) Season 3, Part 1 review at AIPT

Alright!  Season three!  I've been dying to get to this season since I started my 4Kids TMNT cartoon review series.

Lots of Triceraton action in this three-parter, which is actually more the first half of a six-parter, but that's the 4Kids series for ya.  Also did the Christmas special, since even though it's cataloged as being in the middle of the season, it really has to take place at the start of the season.

And then there's those terrible Flashtoons that Fox used as filler between commercial breaks.  I got them out of the way.  I'm glad.

I finish off my reviews of the 4Kids TMNT cartoon's second season over at AIPT today!

And what perfect timing, too.  As Miyamoto Usagi is just wrapping up his latest crossover revival with the TMNT, we get to revisit the start of his crossovers with the previous generation.

While season 2 had its ups and downs, it ends on a high note with "The Big Brawl" multi-parter.  Even the standalone "Return of the Justice Force" was better than I remembered it (and a legit improvement on the comic version in many ways).

Now on to season 3 and more Triceratons!

This was not a great stretch of episodes; sort of a season low.  "Rogue in the House" was a pretty good pick-me-up, but man.  "Junklantis".  "April's Artifact".  "The Golden Puck".  That was rough.

The highlight for this batch was "What a Croc", the introduction of the 4Kids version of Leatherhead.  The rest were pretty meh, especially the rather badly paced and watered down adaptation of "City at War".  Also the underground mutants, but nobody gives a shit about them.

TMNT Universe #11 came out this week and I'll try to get my copy this weekend, so that should be on the slate soon.

"Secret Origins" is every bit as awesome as I remember it; a great way to finish off that epic ten-episode arc after the underwhelming "Turtles in Space" sequence.  "Modern Love: The Return of Nano" was okay and "The Ultimate Ninja" was way better than I remember it being.  All in all, not a bad batch of episodes.

There are also some IDW TMNT books from last week that I need to catch up on, so I'll get on those.

In this installment, I cover the 5-part "Turtles in Space" saga, and no surprise, that's NOT one of my favorites stretches of episodes.  Still, now that it's behind me I can dive deeper into season 2 with a little more enthusiasm.  And hey, plenty of Triceratons and they're always cool.

TMNT Universe #9 also comes out this week, so I'll get to that by the weekend at the latest.

TMNT (2003) Season 1, Part 5 review at AIPT

Over at AIPT, I finish up my review of TMNT (2003) Season 1 with the last 3 episodes and some bonus content!

"The Search for Splinter" arc is a bit of a drag to end the season on, at least coming after the more explosive "Return to New York" arc, but it has some solid moments in it.  I also check out the first series of short segments that ran during commercial breaks and for some reason are all in terrible quality on You Tube.

Alright, I'm going to do some different cartoon write-ups before I get back on the 4Kids TMNT wagon, but it shouldn't be too long before I tackle season 2!  Maybe the outer space arc won't be quite as boring as I remember it.  One can only hope.

These episodes cover the (brief) "exile to Northampton" era and the fantastic "Return to New York" 3-parter.  Introduction of the Turtle Tots aside, these are some damn good episodes.

As for comics, I was too busy last week to pick up TMNT Universe, but I'll nab it on Wednesday along with this week's new releases and then play catch-up.

Here's my review of TMNT (2003) Season 1, Part 3 over at AIPT.

"Notes from the Underground" was just as boring as I remembered it.  "The King" was just as exact an adaptation of the Donatello micro as I remembered it.  And "The Shredder Strikes Back" was just as freakin' awesome as I remembered it.

Gratifying.

In this bunch we get that awesome two-part first encounter with the Shredder that's just as good now as it was 13 years ago.  We also get Garbageman.  Sigh.

I'll see if I can knock out one more of these before end of year.  I'll get to Batman/TMNT Adventures #2 this weekend, though.
