Mirage TMNT short comics

As you are no doubt well aware, Mirage published a boatload of short-form Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comics during the 25 years they spent as stewards of the franchise.  These stories were scattered across back-ups in Mirage titles (sometimes exclusive to later printings), segments in anthology titles, bonus features in reprint collections, and as guest content in books from other publishers.

While trade paperbacks such as Shell Shock have made an attempt to collect many of these stories, there's no single way to snatch them all up at once.  So for ease of reference, here's a listing of all the short-form TMNT comics either created by or published by Mirage, in alphabetical order by title.  Exceptions include back-up strips from TMNT publications that didn't feature the TMNT (such as the Space Usagi and Gizmo back-ups).

Movie and Cartoon reviews

I've decided to expand TMNT Entity! Instead of merely boasting reviews of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle comic books, we'll now be covering the franchise's other media outlets, such as the movies, cartoons and occasional live action television series or special (god help us all).

You can find these reviews (as well as other non-TMNT articles by me) over at Adventures in Poor Taste; a site I regularly contribute to. For the sake of convenience, however, I'll index them all here!

Awesome Turtle Pictures index

It occurred to me that I don't update TMNT Entity nearly enough. Unfortunately, I don't have time to write lengthy reviews or essays every single day, thus my sporadic updating schedule. And when I'm dedicating my daily allotment of Turtle Time to translating TMNT manga, a payoff readers won't get to see for some months, that just makes keeping a visable update schedule for TMNT Entity that much harder.

So, to inject some cheap filler into my blog, I'll try to keep you folks entertained with selections of some of my favorite pieces of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles artwork, or "Awesome Turtle Pictures". And believe me, there's plenty of it.

*Headbanger's Ball.
*I hate his X-Men stuff, but this was pretty sweet.
*The Dark Turtle Returns.
*Super TMNT Tournament Fighters II Turbo EX Special Champion Edition.
*When your box art is the best part of your game.
*He's a radical rat!
*He'd be even scarier with a Cajun accent.
*Truly prehistoric.
*The original one-sheet for "Alligator II: The Mutation".
*The pants-wetting art of David Rapoza.
*It's a Tokka type of Tuesday.
*You can tell it's 1985 because Eastman and Laird are still drawing.
*A better Derek Yaniger than Derek Yaniger.
*Not to be confused with the orange-flavored beverage.
*Those times they kinda sorta met Gizmo.
*The history of Krang's amazing pecs.
*City at Where?
*Mamma-Mia!  That's-a some good art!
*Today, on a very specific episode of Awesome Turtle Pictures.
*A cover so nice they made it twice!  Then 20 more times.
*I hope this doesn't end in a Jim Lawsuit.
*Wouldn't Raph have been more appropriate?
*It's like the '90s threw up.
*And these are the "normal" ones.
*Come for the Slash, stay for the Critters.
*This ain't yer daddy's comic book, fanboy!
*Junk Man in the Trunk Man.
*No Girls Allowed!
*Chote... Chote... Isn't that a college for, like, drama kids or something?
*"You guys are stupid, ya see, 'cause they're gonna be lookin' fer ninjas!"
*This is #31, but it probably should have been #30.
*They scare because they care.
*A million Shredder pin-ups to choose from, but this is one of the best.
*These Italian artists are really good at painting the Turtles.  Go figure.
*Not quite as insane as his He-Man stuff, but close.
*This was an issue of TMNT Adventures, I'm sure of it.
*Zog in a nutshell.
*"It's over, Leonardo!  I have the high ground!"
*TMNT Volume 3, from an alternate universe.
*Krang in his tiny little spaceship is the best part.

The Complete Gizmo by Michael Dooney

Gizmo by Mirage staffer Michael Dooney has always been a personal favorite comic book series of mine and one I've wanted to discuss as thoroughly as any of my Ninja Turtles reviews. So, as a special feature to TMNT Entity, I decided to throw up a guide to Michael Dooney's robot-dude from the future and hopefully introduce the character to those who may not know about him.

Next to the single short-lived ongoing series, the adventures of Gizmo Sprocket are largely related through a slew of back-up and bonus comics scattered across numerous indie comics of the 80s and early 90s (most commonly Mirage publications). A collected volume was published in a limited run, though it does not contain all the Gizmo comics produced.

So, with that in mind, hopefully this handy guide will help fans to track down Gizmo's many appearances. With any luck, I haven't overlooked anything!

Gizmo Comics:

*Domino Chance #7 (November, 1983), "Our Hero, Gizmo Sprocket esq."
*Domino Chance #8 (December, 1983), "Shopping Spree"

*Gizmo (Vol. 1) #1 (May-June, 1985), "A Gasket in Need is a Gasket Indeed!"

*Michaelangelo (microseries) #1 (December, 1985), "One Unconventional Robot"

*Gizmo (Vol. 2) #1 (1986), "That Was No Teddy Bear, That Was My..."
*Gizmo (Vol. 2) #2 (1986), "Finally Shandaar!"
*Gizmo (Vol. 2) #3 (1986), "Bits an' Pieces"
*Gizmo (Vol. 2) #4 (1986), "A Gasket in Need is a Gasket Indeed" (reprint with new frontispiece), "Peace on the Line"
*Gizmo (Vol. 2) #5 (March, 1987), "Lions an' Robots an' Girls oh my!"
*Gizmo (Vol. 2) #6 (July, 1987), "A Ghost of a Chance"

*Gobbledygook (Vol. 2) #1 (December, 1986), "Shopping Spree" (reprint)

*Grunts #1 (November, 1987), "Monuments"

*The Collected Gizmo (December, 1988), Gizmo (Vol. 2) #1-6 (reprints), "King for a Day", "One Unconventional Robot" (reprint), "Peace on the Line" (reprint), "Monuments" (reprint)

*Gizmo and the Fugitoid #2 (July, 1989), Book Two

*Mirage Mini Comics Collection story #5 (1989), "Reflections on a Metal Face"

*Plastron Cafe #1 (December, 1992), "Sirensong"

*TMNT (Vol. 4) #6 (October, 2002), "A Few Small Repairs"

Cameo Appearances:

*TMNT (Vol. 1) #9 (September, 1986), Raphael and Gizmo bonus pin-up.
*TMNT (Vol. 1) #13 (February, 1988), Leonardo and Gizmo bonus pin-up.
*TMNT (Vol. 1) #47 (May, 1992), "Masks, Part II"
